Airport Guide

One of the world's busiest airports, London Heathrow records more than 60 million passenger movements annually. The airport is located approximately 14 miles or 22 km west of downtown London. Heathrow began as a small private landing strip in 1929, was expanded during WW II to accommodate long distance military flights to the Far East, and eventually was developed as a full-service commercial and international airport. Today, London Heathrow is served by more than 60 airlines flying to and from over 170 cities worldwide.

There are five passenger terminals at London Heathrow Airport. Each one serves specific airlines. Much of the recent construction projects to refurbish the terminals and expand the number of passenger gates has been completed, and Terminal 4 has been completely renovated over the past few years. London Heathrow Airport is the primary hub for British Airways and also serves as a major departure port for Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, Air France, American Airlines, Lufthansa and United Airlines. Heathrow Airport can be reached by car from the M4, M25, and A30 highways.

Airport Travel

Terminal 4 was completed in 1986. Because of its location south of the runways and adjacent to the cargo hangars, passengers use the Heathrow Cargo Tunnel to connect by car with the other airport terminals. The entire London Heathrow Airport has an interconnecting rail system known as the Heathrow Connect Trains. This shuttle train service connects Terminal 4 with Terminals 1 and 3, with connections made at Heathrow Central for other airport destinations.

The Terminal 4 station can also be used to travel directly to downtown London. Heathrow Connect takes passengers to the Paddington Station, and the Piccadilly Line has direct service through downtown London and on to Cockfosters Station.

Travel between Terminals 4 and 5 is by bus only. Bus routes 480 and 492 make regular stops at both terminals, curbside on the lower levels. The Heathrow Express trains offer rapid service from Terminal 4 to the other airport facilities, with wait times generally less than 10 minutes.
